The Sacyr Vallehermoso Group's concession business was created in 1996 when it was awarded its first concession contract.
In 2009, it completed the sale of specific shareholdings in companies that formed Itínere through an agreement signed previously with Citi Infrastructure Partners, L.P. Sacyr Vallehermoso retained corporate shareholdings in 25 concessions that were in the construction or ramp-up phases and the rest of the non-motorway assets (service areas, intermodal transfer facilities, airports, and hospitals). All of these were grouped into a new company, Sacyr Concesiones, which is the vehicle through which SyV Group continues to develop its activities in the infrastructure concession sector.
Sacyr Vallehermoso maintains a 15.7% stake in Itínere which is included in the accounts as a temporary financial asset.
In 2009, SACYR CONCESIONES was the eighth largest company in the world in terms of concession participation, according to the prestigious Public Works Financing Magazine.
As of 31 December 2009, the portfolio of the Sacyr Concesiones group includes 28 concessions distributed throughout 6 countries. Of these, 18 are motorway concessions, distributed among the EU (Spain 11, Portugal: 1, Ireland: 2, Italy 1) and America (Chile: 1 and Costa Rica: 2). Sacyr Concesiones also has 10 non-motorway concessions: 3 hospitals in the Region of Madrid, 2 hospitals in Portugal, 2 intermodal transfer facilities – also in Madrid –, 1 metro line in Seville, 1 airport in Murcia and 1 motorway service area company.
